Nigeria’s central bank announced that the eNaira, a digital currency, will be launched on Monday, months after prohibiting banks and financial organizations from dealing in or aiding cryptocurrency transactions.
Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, has stated that the eNaira will function as a wallet for users to save current funds in their bank accounts.
“As a result, the eNaira represents a significant advancement in the evolution of money, and the CBN is committed to ensuring that the eNaira, like the physical Naira, is available to everybody,” the bank said in a statement.
Bitt Inc, based in Barbados, has been designated as a technical partner in the development of the eNaira by Nigeria.
