Uber Quits Nigeria and Uganda to Pivot to London Autonomous Tech.

Uber Technologies, a ride-hailing company, announced on Wednesday that it will discontinue its 12-year presence in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, on September 2.

Uber stated that it had reviewed its operations and decided to close its Nigerian company, but it did not elaborate on the reasons behind the decision.

The ride-hailing industry in Nigeria has become more competitive in recent years, with operators facing rising fuel prices, inflation, and currency fluctuations that have increased operating costs and put pressure on platforms and drivers.

In a statement to users, the corporation stated, “After a thorough review of our business, we have made the tough decision to wind down our operations in Nigeria, effective 2 September 2026.”

To address the increasing demand for app-based transportation, the San Francisco-based company first entered West Africa’s largest economy in Lagos in 2014.

Later, it expanded to other cities in the nation.

Uber announced that its help center would be open until September 23 to help consumers with unresolved account-related problems.

Uber did not specify whether any assets would be sold or how many drivers or passengers would be impacted by the closure.

Uber has also ceased operations in Uganda, according to a statement sent by an Uber representative via email on Thursday.

On Thursday, users in Uganda who tried to reserve trips on the app were informed that there were none available.
