British Prime Minister Keir Starmer stated on Monday that social media sites like Instagram and TikTok must take measures to prevent young people from wasting hours idly scrolling through endless videos.
Like other nations, Britain is thinking about limiting children’s access to social media and is trying curfews, app time limitations, and bans to see how they affect schooling, family life, and sleep.
“We’re consulting on whether there should be a ban for under 16s,” Starmer stated on BBC Radio.
However, I believe that the addictive scrolling processes are just as bad. They must go.
According to Starmer, parents were pleading with the government to step in because social media corporations had created algorithms that were meant to promote addictive behavior.
In December, Australia became the first nation in the world to forbid minors under 16 from using social media; Greece and Indonesia have since followed suit.
The UK government reported that over 45,000 people had already responded to their consultation on children’s online safety and that contributions could still be made before the deadline of May 26.
Technology Secretary Liz Kendall stated on Monday, “We want to hear from mums and dads who are worried about the amount of time their kids spend online and what they are viewing.
“We want to hear from families about their opinions on curfews, AI chatbots, and addictive features, as teens are the best people to understand what it’s like to grow up in the era of social media.
