Microsoft will invest $2.9b in Japan to expand cloud and AI infrastructure.

The latest in a string of foreign expansions by major tech companies to promote the development of artificial intelligence, Microsoft said on Tuesday that it will invest $2.9 billion over two years to build its cloud and AI infrastructure in Japan. 

The company’s greatest investment in its 46 years of operating in the nation, it will also help train three million individuals in artificial intelligence and establish a Microsoft Research Asia facility in Tokyo.

Following ChatGPT’s late 2022 debut, server operators are growing their data centres and cloud computing assets worldwide to accommodate an increase in AI workloads and apps.

The cloud division of Amazon.com is spending $10 billion in Mississippi and an additional $5.3 billion in Saudi Arabia on data centres. For $1 billion, Google is establishing a data centre just outside of London.

The top three cloud computing businesses globally are Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, a division of Alphabet, and Microsoft Azure.
