Duke Energy consortium to build a Florida plant to produce, store, and combust 100% green hydrogen.

Duke Energy, an electric company, announced on Friday that it will construct a clean energy project in Florida that would use an end-to-end system to produce, store, and burn 100% green hydrogen.

The new system will be housed in Duke’s current facilities in DeBary and is the result of a partnership between Duke, the construction management and consulting firm Sargent and Lundy, and General Electric’s affiliate GE Vernova, the company said in a statement.

Green hydrogen is anticipated to be crucial in decarbonizing a number of industries, including transportation. It is produced by electrolysis of water using renewable energy.

According to Duke, the DeBary demonstration project would start construction later this year and might take a year to finish.

Starting with the current 74.5 megawatt (MW) DeBary solar facility, the new system would supply clean energy for two 1-MW electrolyzer units.

By 2024, the new system should be deployed and operational, according to the corporation.
