POLITICS, GOVERNANCE, AND OPEN SOCIETY.

POLITICS, GOVERNANCE, AND OPEN SOCIETY.

Elections come over a cycle of 4 years in Nigeria to enable Nigerians to choose political office holders that will govern the country for that period.

It is important to note that elections are processes to achieve the objective of good governance and not an end in itself.

However, the open society should note that the greatest beneficiaries of electoral victories are the political officeholders and by extension the political parties and their cronies.

An open society will only benefit from proper governance by these political actors.

Open society should therefore not allow ethnicity, religious and tribal sentiments to becloud them in celebrating the victories of the political office holders which is for a period of 4 or at best 8 years.

Open society should insist on using global benchmarks to measure their performance such as the attainment of SDG/MDG goals, the welfare of citizens, GDP growth rates, and the security of lives and property.

Congratulations to the winners and those who did not win should be allowed to explore the full reliefs available to them under the law to prove their cases.

The only demand we put before the incoming administration is the realization that Nigeria was rated as G25 decades ago and any rating below G20 during this current dispensation will be sub-optimal.

We are available to provide the pathway for achieving the target.
