Virginia: Amazon Web Services to set up Multiple Data Centers and create 1,000 jobs in a $35b deal.

The cloud services subsidiary of Amazon.com Inc. announced plans to spend an additional $35 billion by 2040 to develop data centers in Virginia.

The increased investment, according to Amazon Web Services (AWS), will generate 1,000 new employments. Glenn Youngkin, the Republican governor of Virginia, said that AWS would build numerous data center campuses throughout the state.

AWS reported in 2021 that between 2011 and 2020 it invested $35 billion in data centers in northern Virginia and had 3,500 full-time employees at those facilities.

Virginia is proposing a new “Mega Data Center Incentive Program,” which would enable the corporation to get up to a 15-year extension of Data Center Sales and Use tax exemptions on equipment and software. The program is pending approval by state legislators.

Additionally, AWS will be qualified for a $140 million state grant that can be used “for workforce development, site, and infrastructure enhancements, and other project-related costs.”

After a protracted selection process, Amazon declared in 2018 that northern Virginia will be the location of its second headquarters, or “HQ2,” which will eventually employ more than 25,000 people. According to Amazon, there were about 5,000 employees working on the site as of April.

Youngkin has come under fire for pulling out of a contest to attract a new Ford Motor battery facility that is anticipated to be constructed with China’s Contemporary Amperex Technology Co Ltd CATL.

Youngkin’s spokeswoman earlier this week stated: “While Ford is an iconic American firm, it became evident that this idea would act as a front for the Chinese Communist party, which might compromise our economic security and Virginians’ private lives.

Ford failed to respond to questions regarding Youngkin’s remarks, the status of the proposed project, or its discussions with CATL, but announced in July that it intended to localize 40 GWh of battery capacity in North America beginning in 2026.
