Washington State Christmas sabotage: 14k people in darkness, as 3 substations vandalized.

On Christmas morning, three electricity substation facilities in Pierce County, Washington, were vandalized, authorities said. As a result, more than 14,000 customers lost power.

According to the sheriff’s office in Pierce County, which includes Tacoma, two of the break-ins occurred at Tacoma Public utility substations, and the third took place at a Puget Sound Energy station.

The sheriff’s office reports that there are no suspects in their custody.

The sheriff’s office issued a statement saying, “It is uncertain if there are any motives or if this was a concerted attack on the electrical systems.

Tacoma Public Utilities first reported that over 2,000 of its customers were without power and that restoration personnel is working on restoring service. The company later updated that all but about 900 customers had their power restored.

The effects of today’s intentional harm, the business claimed, “Are unfortunately more severe in certain places than initial tests suggested. “Tomorrow morning about 8:00 AM, some customers will be restored. We appreciate your patience as we address this deliberate system vandalism.”

“We know that many people’s holiday celebrations have been interrupted by this tragedy, and our crews are working diligently to safely restore power to every customer as soon as we can,” it continued.

Last month, the Department of Homeland Security released an advisory stating that “lone offenders and small groups motivated by a range of ideological convictions and/or personal grudges” may target U.S. vital infrastructure.

Tens of thousands of customers in North Carolina lost power earlier this month as a result of two electrical substations being shot up, prompting local authorities to declare an emergency.
