A friend of the British prime minister said on Friday that Boris Johnson and his wife, Carrie, are moving the venue of a scheduled wedding party, refuting claims that he was continuing in a caretaker capacity as a result.
Johnson, who has stated he will step down, reportedly intended to stay on for a few months in part because he planned to host a party at his official Chequers country estate later this month to commemorate his marriage, The Mirror newspaper claimed on Thursday.
Under the condition of anonymity, a close supporter of the prime minister stated that it “is simply ludicrous to claim” that the party plan was a justification for Johnson to continue in a caretaker capacity. Chequers would no longer host the celebration.
The Prime Minister has a strong sense of duty and will continue to serve his country until a new leader is in place, purely to maintain his responsibilities to the public, according to a Downing Street spokeswoman when questioned about the report on Thursday.
British prime ministers typically utilize Chequers, a 16th-century English country estate north of the city, as a personal country retreat, a place to welcome foreign leaders, and on occasion, a place to hold parties, in addition to their official residence at 10 Downing Street in London.
In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, Johnson wed Carrie, 34, in a low-key, private ceremony at Westminster Cathedral in the heart of London.
The wedding celebration in Chequers was scheduled for July 30.
