The first flight taking asylum seekers to Rwanda is scheduled to depart in ten to twelve weeks, according to British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, who also unveiled plans for his centerpiece initiative to combat illegal migration.
At a news conference, Sunak stated that the government has made particular preparations but he would not go into the specifics of the plan’s operations.
“I can confirm that we’ve put an airfield on standby, booked commercial charter planes for specific slots, and we have 500 highly trained individuals ready to escort illegal migrants to Rwanda with 300 more trained in the coming weeks,” Sunak stated.
“We’re prepared. There are prepared plans. And whatever happens, these flights will proceed.”
As per Sunak’s timeline, the inaugural flight is scheduled to depart in July.
Laptops 1000In response to a query concerning Britain’s membership in the European Convention on Human Rights, Sunak added that he was “confident” that the plan complies with all of Britain’s international responsibilities.
He stated of the European Court of Human Rights, “If it ever comes down to a choice between our national security — securing our borders — and membership of a foreign court, I’m, of course, always going to prioritize our national security.”
