U.S. government releases guidelines for using AI in critical infrastructure.

The Biden administration published Guidelines for using AI in the water system, electricity grid, air travel network, and other vital infrastructure on Thursday.

The Homeland Security Department’s rules, created in collaboration with the department’s advisory Artificial Intelligence Safety and Security Board, would need to be adopted and followed by the private sector.

“We intend the framework to be, frankly, a living document and to change as developments in the industry change as well,” Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas told reporters.

According to the guideline, AI developers should assess potentially harmful features in their products, ensure they adhere to “human-centric values,” and safeguard customers’ privacy.

The cloud computing infrastructure would have to verify the reliability of software and hardware providers and safeguard the physical security of data centers.

It is recommended that owners and operators of vital infrastructure implement more robust cybersecurity procedures that take AI-related risks into account and make the usage of AI transparent. State and local governments are also subject to these rules.

Mayorkas emphasized that he was carrying out the principles of President Joe Biden’s administration when asked if the framework would alter after President-elect Donald Trump takes the oath of office in January.

“What policies to promulgate and implement will be decided by the president-elect,” Mayorkas stated. “And that is the prerogative of the president-elect.”
