Tygerberg Hospital: Cape Town’s first public facility to deploy a Da Vinci robot for surgery in Africa.

At Tygerberg Public Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, a surgical team led by Dr. Tim Forgan utilizes the da Vinci Xi robot to help remove a malignant rectal tumor from a female patient.

The robot, which has four “arms,” is the most sophisticated surgical robot in Africa. Forgan controls it in real-time through an immersive 3D consultation. There are only two such robots in use on the entire continent, and both of them are located in Cape Town’s South African public hospitals.

At these facilities, the platform is mostly used for difficult urological, gynecological, and colorectal operations.

At Tygerberg Hospital, the first procedure utilizing the brand-new robot was carried out in February. Since then, dozens more have been successfully accomplished.
