Toyota rejigs its board by adding auditors for the first time and outsiders to outperform Tesla and BYD.

To include a wider range of perspectives and give auditors more responsibility, Toyota revealed plans to reorganize its board on Tuesday.

Christopher Reynolds, who is now an executive in the automaker’s North American business, is one of the six appointments.

According to Toyota, he brings expertise in risk management and human resources as a lawyer and the son of a Ford employee.

The additions of Hiromi Osada, a former Toyota auditor, and Kumi Fujisawa, an independent outsider and businesswoman, will increase the number of women on the 10-member board from one to two. George Olcott, previously an auditor, will also join the board.

There will be five outside members instead of only four.

According to Toyota Human Resources manager Takanori Azuma, the new board has auditors on it for the first time.

Since the business acknowledged cheating on certification tests for seven car models last year, its internal controls have been criticized.

As “weapons for survival” in a changing climate, Azuma stated that the additions are intended to bring a variety of perspectives to its leadership.

He said it would be a mistake to expect that our customers and people around the world will be able to relate to what we thought up inside.

The manufacturer of the Camry and the luxury Lexus models has been attempting to evolve into what it refers to as “a mobility company” as the automotive industry experiences significant changes, including the entry of strong relative newcomers like BYD and Tesla.

The roles of Chief Executive Koji Sato and Chairman Akio Toyoda, who are members of the company’s founding family, will not change.

Later this year, the corporation plans to conduct a general shareholders’ meeting to request approval for the new board.
