Storm Arwen wreaks havoc on Britain, cuts the electricity supply to a hundred thousand people.

Storm Arwen knocked out power to tens of thousands of people throughout the UK overnight, with gusts gusting to nearly 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour) in some areas.

Winds of 98 mph were recorded at Brizlee Wood in Northumberland, in north-eastern England, according to the Met Office, which issued amber and yellow warnings across much of the country on Saturday.

“Many roads remain closed,” it stated on Twitter. “Please only travel if absolutely essential.”

The Northern Powergrid reported that over 55,000 consumers in Northumberland, County Durham, and Tyne & Wear were without power. Engineers were also working in Scotland and southern England to restore supply.
