At least 13 people have been killed and 21 others have been injured in a school in central Russia, according to the local authorities.
Two security guards, two teachers, and five students at the school in the Udmurtia region’s city of Izhevsk were among those killed, according to a statement posted online by Russia’s Investigative Committee. Izhevsk is located about 960 kilometers east of Moscow.
The committee reported that there were 14 youngsters and 7 adults among the injured.
The Udmurtia region’s governor, Alexander Brechalov, claimed in a video message that the as-yet unidentified shooter killed himself.
The incident was referred to as “a terrorist act” by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who also claimed that President Vladimir Putin had provided the required directives to the pertinent agencies.
Peskov told reporters that President Putin “truly mourns the deaths of people and children in the school, where a terrorist incident took place.”
The Investigative Committee claimed that the shooter was sporting a black t-shirt with “Nazi emblems.”
The shooter’s identity and motivations remain a mystery.
Children in the first through eleventh grades are taught there.
According to an official, the school has been closed and the surrounding area has been cordoned off.
The 640,000-person city of Izhevsk is situated in central Russia, west of the Ural Mountains.
