In response to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan this week, China says it is canceling or halting dialogue with the US on topics ranging from climate change to military relations and anti-drug initiatives. The moves pledged to punish Washington for allowing the visit to the island it claims as its own territory to be annexed, if necessary, by force, are the latest in a line of measures that were outlined on Friday. Six areas off the shores of Taiwan are being used by China for menacing military drills.
According to state media reports from the military, missiles were also fired over Taiwan. China opposes the self-governing island’s interactions with other nations.
The conversation between area commanders and the leaders of the defense departments, as well as discussions on military maritime safety, would be scrapped, according to the foreign ministry. The ministry announced that cooperation on the return of unauthorized immigrants, criminal investigations, international crime, illegal substances, and climate change will be discontinued.
