In anticipation of being formally confirmed by the Senate, Olayemi Cardoso, who was recently nominated by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to serve as the nation’s next central bank governor, assumed office on Friday, according to the central bank.
Godwin Emefiele resigned from his position as central bank chief after Tinubu suspended him in June. He was later arrested by the police and accused of procurement fraud. Cardoso then took over.
Following the departure of Emefiele’s deputies and Folashodun Shonubi, who served as governor following Emefiele’s suspension, four new designated deputy governors also started working on Friday in an interim capacity, the central bank said in a statement.
