Nigeria ravaged by worst floods in a decade: 300 people dead, food supply chain disrupted.

As a result of this year’s floods, which have claimed the lives of more than 300 people, including 20 this week, authorities in Nigeria claim they are confronting the worst flooding the West African country has experienced since 2012. Yusuf Sani Babura, director of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, declared that the situation is “beyond our control” in the northwest Jigawa state where floods have killed 91 people, including 20 this week. There are worries that the floods could further disrupt the nation’s food supply, which has already been hampered by armed conflict in the northwest and center of the country. The floods have also destroyed crops in many farmlands, mostly in northern Nigeria, which produces much of the nation’s food.
