Since the beginning of the year, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has confirmed 21 cases of monkeypox, with one death reported.
Monkeypox is endemic in Cameroon, the Central African Republic, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Nigeria, and is a typically mild viral infection.
However, it has sparked global concern after more than 200 suspected and confirmed cases of the virus were discovered in at least 19 countries, predominantly in Europe, since early May. So yet, no deaths have been reported.
According to the NCDC, 21 of 61 probable monkeypox cases reported since January have been verified, including one death, a 40-year-old man. The incidents were reported in nine states, as well as the federal capital of Nigeria, Abuja.
“There has been no evidence of any novel or unusual transmission of the virus, nor changes in its clinical manifestation noted (including symptoms, profile, and virulence) among the 21 cases reported so far in 2022,” the NCDC added.
Six of the instances were discovered this month, according to the report.
