Brazil, the chair of the BRICS bloc of developing countries, has announced that Nigeria has been accepted as a “partner country.”
To counterbalance the Group of Seven leading industrialized nations, Brazil, Russia, India, and China founded BRICS in 2009, and South Africa joined in 2010.
The United Arab Emirates, Ethiopia, Egypt, and Iran joined the alliance last year. Saudi Arabia has been asked to participate. Malaysia, Azerbaijan, and Turkey have all formally sought to join, while several additional countries have shown interest.
Laptops 1000Nigeria is now the ninth partner country of the BRICS alliance, joining Belarus, Bolivia, Cuba, Kazakhstan, Malaysia, Thailand, Uganda, and Uzbekistan.
“With Africa’s largest economy and the sixth-largest population in the world, Nigeria shares convergent interests with other members of BRICS,” the Brazilian government said in a statement on Friday.
“It actively contributes to the reform of global governance and the strengthening of South-South cooperation, two issues of utmost importance during Brazil’s current presidency.”
Last year, President-elect Donald Trump threatened to impose 100% tariffs on the BRICS countries if they did anything to weaken the US dollar.
The bloc’s leaders have stated that they are committed to implementing a different payment system that is not reliant on the dollar.
