Nigeria approves the construction of Benue’s 1,650 MW Hydropower Plant for $3b.

Nigeria has granted the green light for the $3 billion development of a 1,650 MW hydropower facility.

If the project is completed, it will go down in history as one of the greatest power projects ever.

The project would be located in the north-central state of Benue and be sponsored through a public-private partnership. Vice President Yemi Osinbajo’s spokesperson, Laolu Akande, issued a statement.

Akande did not specify a start date for construction, though.

The increase in the power supply is expected to be the primary priority of President Muhammadu Buhari’s successor, who will take office after the 2023 elections.

Due to Nigeria’s poor transmission infrastructure and low power output, many homes and businesses are currently dependent on diesel generators.

Authorities announced this week that the government would give the concession to manage the $1.3 billion hydropower station in Zungeru, China, which will start producing energy in the first quarter of 2023.
