One person was killed, another was injured, and hundreds more spring breakers were forced to flee for cover as gunfire erupted in a busy section of Miami Beach, according to authorities.
The Miami Beach Police Department reported that two guys were shot on Friday night, and one individual was taken into custody at the site. It was unclear if the shooter was the individual being held. Three guns, according to the police, were also found.
When hundreds of people converge to celebrate spring break, vehicle traffic is prohibited along Ocean Drive in South Beach, where the shooting occurred. According to authorities, one of the victims passed away in a hospital and the other was listed in critical condition. Their identities weren’t right away made public.
Authorities reported that dozens of individuals scurried to escape the shooting. Yellow crime scene tape has blocked off many nearby blocks.
There was no more information available right away.
This year’s shooting on South Beach over spring break is the second in as many years. Following two shootings that also occurred on Ocean Drive the previous year, the city enacted a midnight curfew.
The year before, during a boisterous spring break, there were nearly 1,000 arrests, and dozens of firearms were seized, prompting Miami Beach officials to take action to calm the situation.
