Authorities reported on Friday that two Canadians died of gunshot wounds at a resort near Cancun on Mexico’s Caribbean coast after an argument turned violent.
According to Mexican officials, who cited information from Canadian police, both guests at the premium resort on the Riviera Maya in Quintana Roo state had criminal backgrounds.
The attorney general’s office in Quintana Roo, home to a stretch of white-sand beach resorts and lush jungles, said Mexican police are looking for another person suspected of firing the rounds who has an “extensive” criminal record in Canada.
Lucio Hernandez, the chief of public security in Quintana Roo, reported on Twitter that a gun was shot at the Hotel Xcaret after a “fight among hotel guests.”
According to Hernandez, three persons were hurt and sent to the hospital. He shared images of the alleged shooter, who was dressed in a gray tracksuit and wearing a black face mask while holding a rifle in front of lush greenery.
The attack looked to be “targeted and isolated,” according to Xcaret, and the hotel is assisting the victims. In a statement, it added, “We greatly regret the incidents that transpired this afternoon at Hotel Xcaret.”
The Canadian government stated that it was in contact with Mexican officials and that it could not disclose any additional information owing to privacy concerns.
