In Nigeria, many workers are trapped beneath a collapsed high-rise.

According to witnesses, a high-rise structure under construction in Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial metropolis fell on Monday, trapping many workers beneath a pile of concrete rubble.

According to two workers at the site in the upscale Ikoyi neighborhood, where many blocks of flats are under construction, up to 100 people were at work when the building collapsed.

Building collapses are common in Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, where standards are regularly disregarded and construction materials are frequently subpar.

A pile of rubble stood where the structure formerly stood, with several employees standing nearby. The cause of the collapse was not immediately known.

The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency said that its emergency response plan had been activated.

The agency said in a statement that “all first responders are on the scene, and heavy-duty equipment and life detection equipment have been dispatched.”
