Google will invest $2b in Malaysia making it the 12th Country to host a data center and Cloud hub.

In the next major move by a major American IT company into South-east Asia, Google is to invest $2 billion in Malaysia, building its first data center and a Google Cloud hub.

The declaration comes after Microsoft recently declared that it will invest $2.2 billion over the next four years to construct Malaysia’s new artificial intelligence and cloud infrastructure.

Google’s investment was welcomed by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim as evidence of the company’s faith in Malaysia’s economy and government.

Anwar stated on Thursday that by 2030, the investment is anticipated to boost GDP by $3.2 billion and generate 26,500 new employments.

Anwar considers the investments a triumph as he tries to fortify his position against a potent Islamic opposition.

The additional hubs, according to a statement from Google, will be built at a business park in the state of Selangor in central Malaysia.

This is to accommodate the increasing demand for cloud services as well as artificial intelligence literacy initiatives for educators and students in Malaysia.

The 12th nation to host a Google data center will be Malaysia. The Google Cloud hub in Malaysia is set to provide services to startups, major organizations, and the public sector. It is expected to join the 40 regions and 121 zones that are now operational globally.

Ruth Porat, president and chief financial officer of Alphabet Inc., stated, “This investment builds on our partnership with the government of Malaysia to advance its ‘Cloud First Policy,’ including best-in-class cybersecurity standards.”

During visits to the United States last year, Anwar had meetings with Porat and other business leaders.
