Authorities say two people were killed and eight others were injured in a shooting near a fast-food restaurant in Chicago that drove bystanders fleeing.
The incident occurred around 10:40 p.m. Thursday near a McDonald’s on Chicago’s Near North Side, just a few blocks from the city’s shopping hub, the Magnificent Mile. According to authorities, one guy was apprehended and a firearm was recovered.
Police did not immediately provide information on what led to the shooting, but a witness, Deonna Jackson, 18, said the shooting looked to be the result of a disagreement outside the restaurant.
Deonna Jackson, 18, told the Chicago Sun-Times, “When the battle originally started, we were right near to them.” “I didn’t want anyone to swing on me, so we had to run.”
The incident occurs amid a recent uptick in violent crime in the city. It comes after a tragic shooting in downtown Chicago’s Millennium Park last weekend that killed a teen and prompted the city to impose a curfew for young people in an effort to reduce violence.
According to the Chicago Tribune, a brawl broke out between two people across the street from the shooting scene on Thursday, and some others breached a line of police tape and clashed with policemen before being escorted away.
The identities and ages of the deceased were not immediately released by police. Additional information regarding the shooting’s circumstances was not immediately available. An investigation was still underway.
