Glenn Youngkin, the governor of Virginia, revealed on Monday that two new Amazon operations facilities are coming to Virginia Beach and will eventually employ more than 1,000 people.
According to a news release from the Republican governor’s office, the company will set up a robotics fulfillment center anticipated to open in 2025 and a delivery station anticipated to be operational in time for the 2024 holiday shopping season.
The new facilities will be the 17th delivery location and the 14th fulfillment and sorting center for Amazon in Virginia. According to Youngkin’s office, the corporation, which has its headquarters in Arlington, has made more than $109 billion in Virginia since 2010, including investments in infrastructure and salaries for staff members.
Youngkin said in a statement that “Amazon’s state-of-the-art fulfillment centers generate major capital investment, thousands of jobs, and strengthen Virginia’s position as a logistics industry leader on the East Coast.” We believe that Amazon’s growing presence is having an adverse effect on innovation and economic growth throughout the Commonwealth, and we’ll keep fighting to attract more investment to Virginia.
The release said Amazon offered “industry-leading pay” and perks but did not disclose the expected salaries.
According to the press release, the city of Virginia Beach will pay for the projects’ stormwater and road improvements. According to a spokeswoman for the Virginia Economic Development Partnership, Suzanne Clark, the state is not offering any further incentives in association with the facilities.
