Microsoft Corp. co-founder Bill Gates stated on Monday that creating the best artificial intelligence agent—which has the potential to upend search engines, productivity software, and online shopping platforms—is the key to winning the technology race.

Gates said he would be disappointed if Microsoft was not a contender at AI Forward 2023, a conference in San Francisco organized by Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and SV Angel, albeit there is a 50% chance the winning company will be a startup.
