Animal rights activists are barricading four McDonald’s delivery centers in the U.K. while trying to get the burger chain to focus on turning out to be completely plant-based by 2025.
Animal Rebellion said Saturday that trucks and bamboo structures are being utilized at the distribution sites in Hemel Hempstead, Basingstoke, Coventry and Heywood, Greater Manchester, to prevent trucks from departing the warehouses.
The group said it plans to stay at the destinations for at least 24 hours, causing “critical disturbance” to the McDonald’s supply chain network, adding that the move will influence about 1,300 eateries.
“The meat and dairy industry is obliterating our planet: causing tremendous measures of rainforest deforestation, transmitting monstrous amounts of ozone depleting substances and killing billions of creatures every year,” said James Ozden, a representative of the group.
“The only feasible and practical approach to take care of 10 billion people is with a plant-based food system. Organic, free-range and ‘manageable’ animal based choices just aren’t adequate,” he added.
A McDonald’s representative said the organization was evaluating the effect of “the disturbance” on its cafés.
“We apologize to our clients for any failure caused,” the representative said.
