A Russian anti-war activist has been granted asylum in France.

President Emmanuel Macron said the anti-war activist who interrupted a news show on Russia’s official television while waving a banner opposing the war in Ukraine will be protected by the French embassy and granted asylum.

Marina Ovsyannikova was identified as a woman by an independent human rights organization that tracks political arrests. Ovsyannikova, who identified herself as a station employee, was taken into police custody, according to the OVD-Info website.

In their next phone chat, Macron said he will “propose this solution in a clear and very concrete manner” to Russian President Vladimir Putin.
