OpenAI, Anthropic collaborates with the US government to research, test, and evaluate AI models.

The U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute said on Thursday that artificial intelligence startups OpenAI and Anthropic have inked agreements with the US government for research, testing, and evaluation of their models.

The unprecedented deals are being made at a time when the businesses are being closely watched by regulators for using AI technology in a morally and safely manner.

Legislators in California are expected to vote on a plan to broadly restrict the development and application of AI within the state as early as this week.

“The beneficial effects of the technology depend on safe, reliable AI. Our partnership with the U.S. AI Safety Institute makes use of their extensive experience to thoroughly evaluate our models prior to their general implementation, stated Jack Clark, Co-Founder and Head of Policy at Anthropic, which is supported by Alphabet and Amazon.

As per the agreements, the U.S. AI Safety Institute will get access to significant new models before and after they are made publically available from both OpenAI and Anthropic.

The agreements will also make it possible for researchers to work together to assess the hazards and capabilities of AI models.

According to Jason Kwon, chief strategy officer of ChatGPT manufacturer OpenAI, “we believe the institute has a critical role to play in defining U.S. leadership in responsibly developing artificial intelligence and hope that our work together offers a framework that the rest of the world can build on.”

Elizabeth Kelly, head of the U.S. AI Safety Institute, stated, “These agreements are just the start, but they are an important milestone as we work to help responsibly steward the future of AI.”

The institute, which is a division of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) of the U.S. Commerce Department, will also work with the U.K. AI Safety Institute and advise the businesses on possible safety enhancements.
