In Istanbul, Turkish security authorities confiscated $1 billion in fake currency and detained six suspects, including three Swedish and one Ghanaian nationals, the governor’s office reported on Friday.
The bogus $100 bills were being transferred to countries in Africa when gendarmerie troops followed the suspects to a storage facility in Istanbul’s Kagithane neighborhood, the official claimed.
Cash and jewelry belonging to the accused were seized after searches of their homes. The Ghanaian and Swedish consulates were informed.
According to the governor’s office, this was the biggest counterfeit seizure in Turkish history.
