A shootout during a motorcycle gathering on Saturday in Red River, northern New Mexico, left two individuals dead and six others injured, according to state police.
During the annual Memorial Day motorcycle rally, riders started firing at one another on the main street of the mountain hamlet located approximately 75 miles northeast of the state capital Santa Fe, according to Red River Mayor Linda Calhoun. She reported three fatalities and five injuries.
Calhoun refused to reveal their identities beyond, “It was members of a motorcycle gang,” “They were all from outside the city.”
The celebration, which includes live music and remembrance rituals at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in nearby Angel Fire, was projected to draw some 28,000 bikers from across the nation.
According to state police on Twitter, several of the injured were taken to a hospital in Taos, New Mexico, about 25 miles to the southwest.
Following the shooting, Taos Town imposed a curfew and prohibited the selling of alcohol.
The incident occurred eight years after a firefight involving members of motorcycle gangs including the Bandidos and Cossacks in Waco, Texas resulted in nine bikers dying and 18 being injured.
