Tata-Air India is set to lead International flights with the purchase of 250 aircraft from Airbus.

Air India, a company owned by the Tata Group, will increase its fleet and operations by purchasing from Airbus 250 aircraft, including 40 wide-body aircraft.

For more than 17 years, Air India has not ordered an aircraft. Additionally, it is the first order placed by the carrier while under Tata Group’s control.

N Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons, announced on Tuesday that Air India has signed a letter of intent to purchase 250 aircraft from Airbus. 210 narrow-body aircraft and 40 wide-body A350 aircraft will be part of it.

Chandrasekaran stated that the wide-body aircraft will be utilized for ultra-long distance flights during a virtual event that was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron, among others.

In general, flights that last somewhat longer than 16 hours are referred to be ultra-long-haul flights.

Tata Group has been implementing several strategies to resuscitate the airline ever since it purchased loss-making Air India from the government in January 2022.

More than 17 years ago, when Air India was previously owned by the government, it bought new planes.

The airline recently placed a 10.8 billion USD order for 111 aircraft, 68 of which were from Boeing and 43 from Airbus. The purchase was made in 2005.

When the Tata Group took over Air India on January 27, the airline said that it was “finalizing a historic order of new aircraft to underpin future expansion.”

The airline has committed to spending USD 400 million to renovate the interiors of its whole wide-body aircraft as part of a roadmap for transformation under Vihaan.AI that will last for the next five years.
