The world’s oldest society, according to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, must act “now or never” if it is to reverse its plummeting birthrate.

During the commencement of the parliamentary session this year, Kishida stated in a policy address that “our nation is on the verge of whether it can retain its societal functions.”

When it comes to laws governing conception and childrearing, he continued, “It is now or never; this is a matter that just cannot wait any longer.”

By June, according to Kishida’s proposals, the funding for child-related programs would be doubled, and a new government agency would be established to address the issue.

According to the most recent data available, Japan saw a record-low number of births in 2021, leading to the country’s largest-ever natural population drop.
