A new Tory leadership election will be held once Liz Truss announces her resignation as prime minister, and it will be decided “within the next week.”
Ms. Truss stated in a speech outside 10 Downing Street that she had realized she “cannot achieve the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party.”
She uttered: “Therefore, I have informed His Majesty the King that I am stepping down as Conservative Party leader.
“I met Sir Graham Brady, the 1922 Committee’s chairman, this morning. We’ve decided that the next week will see the conclusion of the leadership election.
“This will guarantee that we stay on track to carry out our fiscal objectives and uphold the economic stability and security of our nation. Until a replacement is selected, I shall continue to serve as prime minister.”
In response to Ms. Truss’s resignation, Sir Keir Starmer reiterated his call for a general election, stating that “the British public deserves a proper say on the country’s future.” Elections have also been called by the SNP and Lib Dems.
