Nigeria’s 614 km (384 miles) gas pipeline, which is now under construction, will begin operations in the first quarter of next year, helping to enhance the electricity supply, according to Mele Kyari, the chairman of state oil giant NNPC.
The Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano (AKK) pipeline began construction in June 2020, with authorities saying that when completed, it will generate 3.6 gigawatts of power and serve gas-based industries along the route.
Speaking at a site where the pipeline runs through Abuja, Kyari said the pipeline was one of the major projects undertaken by President Muhammadu Buhari’s administration, which has pushed for infrastructure development since taking office in 2015.
“We’ll put gas on this line before the President leaves… we’ll put gas on this line in the first quarter of 2023. As a result of this project, power will be stabilized, and new industries will emerge “Kyari spoke to the press.
The AKK pipeline goes from Ajaokuta in Central Nigeria to Kano in the north of the country, passing through Kaduna.
Nigeria is Africa’s leading crude oil exporter and has some of the world’s largest known gas reserves, but it has failed to attract investment.
