The reason for a Swedish high school student arrested on suspicion of murdering two teachers in the southern city of Malmo on Monday remained unknown to authorities, according to the Malmo police chief.
The 18-year-old was arrested at his Malmo high school on suspicion of murdering two women in their fifties. According to authorities, over 50 students were present at the time of the incident, but no one else was injured.
Petra Stenkula, Malmo’s police chief, said she was unaware of any evidence that the incident was motivated by racism or religious fanaticism.
“I’ve never heard of something like that before. However, it may be far too early to comment on that “she stated at a press conference.
The student had attacked the women with a knife and an axe, according to Swedish daily Aftonbladet, which did not name its sources.
Prime Minister Magdalena Andersson expressed her “grief and dismay” at the news, telling Swedish news agency TT that her thoughts were with the victims’ relatives and friends.
