US 10-year Treasury yields are the sharpest since 1994, but not unprecedented, BNY CEO says.

The CEO of the oldest US bank said that the benchmark 10-year US Treasury yield had reached previously unheard-of levels this year as a sharp decline in government debt drove yields to multi-decade highs.

During the July–September timeframe, the 10-year US Treasury yield, which serves as a gauge for global borrowing costs and asset prices, saw its biggest increase since 1994.

“We have ten-year rates, so let’s say five and a quarter. 10-year rates at that level are not particularly exceptional in the past. In an interview on Thursday, BNY CEO Robin Vince stated, “We’ve had arguably low levels for a very long time.”

The rapid rise in global bond yields is a normalization driven by a strong US economy, high energy prices, and the AI boom. Rather than a sign of crisis, economists view the shifting yield curve as a natural response to robust economic growth fueling inflation fears.

Investors must adapt psychologically to a permanently higher interest rate environment, as a return to ultra-low rates is unlikely. While market fluctuations will occur, experts emphasize that businesses and borrowers need to adjust to these normalized levels.

A sharp tech selloff triggered by hot US inflation data drove investors out of AI stocks and into safe-haven government bonds, forcing Treasury yields lower.

High borrowing costs are pressuring the capital-heavy AI sector, initiating a market evolution that experts say will inevitably expose and weed out weak financial structures.

Driven by strong market levels and rising interest income, BNY reported a 20% jump in third-quarter profit to $1.61 billion, with deposit growth expected to accelerate in Q4.

As the world’s largest custodian managing $63.4 trillion in assets, the financial institution is seeing healthy global demand and anticipates a further lift from a year-end surge in client activity.

BNY is capitalizing on higher interest rates by reinvesting cash from maturing securities into higher-yielding assets, boosting its core earnings.

This strategy directly supports its net interest income, which now accounts for approximately 25% of BNY’s total revenue.
