Microsoft President Brad Smith cautioned that the Trump administration’s decision to limit qualified foreign workers’ access to green cards could undermine US technical competitiveness and push talent abroad, Politico reported on Thursday.
Smith also called on Vice President JD Vance’s claims that Microsoft had misused the H-1B visa program “completely off base” during the interview.
Less than a week had passed when Vance declared that Microsoft and seven other businesses would not be permitted to apply for green cards for talented foreign workers.
Smith stated that attempts to prevent highly talented immigrants from obtaining permanent residency may “cripple” the US technological industry for over a generation, according to Politico.

Additionally, the Microsoft executive claimed that foreign-born workers were paid less than American workers, saying all employees, regardless of immigration status, receive the same pay.
According to the report, Smith said Microsoft hired over 9,000 US-born professionals last year and that the administration’s criticism ignored that contribution.
