Over 90% of video game developers use AI agents to streamline and automate tasks, a Google study shows.

As the video game industry looks to optimize costs after a wave of record layoffs, 87% of developers are employing AI agents to automate and streamline activities, according to a Google Cloud poll.

According to the report released on Monday, the majority of respondents stated that AI was assisting in the automation of repetitive and laborious jobs, allowing engineers to concentrate on more imaginative issues.

To address the industry-wide problem of rising development costs and drawn-out creative cycles brought on by high fan expectations and fierce competition, game publishers have looked to artificial intelligence.

In late June and early July, 615 game developers in the United States, South Korea, Norway, Finland, and Sweden were polled for the study by Google and The Harris Poll.

According to the survey, 44% of developers utilize agents to optimize content and quickly process inputs, including text, voice, code, audio, and video, giving them more freedom to act independently and make judgments.

However, the employment of AI in video games is a very controversial topic, with many in the industry worried about lower compensation, possible job losses, and intellectual property problems.

Hollywood video game actors went on strike last year over wage and AI concerns, and over 10,000 individuals lost their jobs as a result of studio closures.

With the release of high-end games and new consoles anticipated to increase spending, the sector is predicted to pick up steam this year and the next.

94% of developers anticipate that AI will eventually lower overall development costs, says the report.

However, the expenses of integrating AI are considerable, and about one in four developers find it difficult to accurately gauge the return on investment of their AI solutions.

It’s still unclear who technically owns AI-generated material and whether licensing is permitted; almost 63% of respondents voiced concerns about data ownership.
